Earthquake shakes Japan

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.5 shook northern Japan today.

No tsunami warning was issued, and there were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The quake was 118 miles northeast of Tokyo and is reported to have shaken buildings in the Japanese capital.

Its Pacific location is similar to where the devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami hit in March 2011.
