FCO updates travel advice on Israel and Egypt

The British Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has updated its advice to travellers to Israel and Egypt after violent protests in Cairo.

The FCO warned British tourists to take special care in Israel despite the ceasefire declared near the end of last week. It warned travellers to avoid public transport and public gatherings.

Tourists are also advised against all but essential travel to areas within 40km of Israel’s border with Gaza.

In Egypt, clashes between demonstrators and security forces in Cairo at the end of last week led the FCO also to advise travellers to avoid demonstrations and to monitor local media.

The Foreign Office also advised against all but essential travel to South Sinai.

However, it excluded all Red Sea resorts from its advisory, including travel between resorts and between the airports of Taba and Sharm el Sheikh and the resorts.

Tour operator Cox & Kings said last week it had suspended bookings for travel to Israel before the end of January.
