Tourists evacuated as cyclone Evan hits Fiji

Fiji has been battered with winds of up to 125 mph as Cyclone Evan hit the Pacific island nation.

Thousands of tourists are reported to have been relocated from surrounding islands to resorts on the main island of Viti Levu to wait for the storm to pass.

Flights in and out of Fiji were cancelled yesterday.

More than 8,000 people sheltered in 137 evacuation centres when the category-four storm hit, wrecking homes, cutting power and causing flash floods, the BBC reported.

The cyclone has since been downgraded and is expected to weaken further as it heads into cooler southern waters.

No deaths were reported although the cyclone was responsible for killing at least five people as it swept through the neighbouring archipelago of Samoa.

Police limited the movement of people in and out of the main towns in Fiji to protect businesses from looters, according to local media reports.

Evan was downgraded to a category-three storm as it moved off Fiji on Monday night and was forecast to weaken further.
