How to get there: TWA flies direct to St Louis from Gatwick daily. Return fares start at £299 plus taxes. TWA reservation number is 020-8814 0707.


Where to stay: Hyatt Regency at St Louis Union Station, single $135-$205, double $175-$215. Or the mid-priced Drury Inn, near Union Station, single $99-$109, double $109-119.


Attractions: St Louis Gateway Arch, $2.50 for three-12yrs, $4 for 13-16yrs and $6 for adults. City Museum, $6 per person. St. Louis Zoo – free. Missouri Botanical Gardens, $5 adults, $3 seniors and under 12s free.


Where to eat: there is a wealth of great restaurants from four-star to fast food. Lunch of a pasta and salad at Duffs Restaurant in the Central West End neighbourhood would cost about $7.50 without tipping. Alternatively the Italian neighbourhood of The Hill offers a wide selection of bakeries and delis. Beer $1.25 and up depending on whether it is draft or import. Dinner at an upscale restaurant starts at $20.


Transport: One day pass on the Metrolink costs $4. Buses run from 4am-2am for a flat $1.25 fare.
