Fastjet to launch South Africa flights by end of May

Low-cost carrier Fastjet is to lease an aircraft in order to launch flights in South Africa by the end of the month.

A six-month wet lease has been agreed for a Boeing 737 from leasing company Starcargo Airlines

The aircraft, in a 144-passenger configuration, is due to operate on the Johannesburg to Cape Town route.

The deal allows Fastjet to start operations in the country while it goes through the process of obtaining permission from authorities to operate its Airbus 319 aircraft in South Africa, in conjunction with Federal Airlines.

Fastjet Holdings chief executive Kyle Hayward said: “This is yet another definitive step towards the commencement of Fastjet services and we remain on track for an end of May launch.

“Fastjet is working hard with its South African partners to put this initial route – Johannesburg to Cape Town – on sale shortly.”
