Keeping an Eye on the celebrities is wheely good

LONDON’s social climbers have taken the perfect opportunity to raise their profile, courtesy of British Airways.

The airline held the inaugural ceremony for its very tall big wheel, more properly known as the BA London Eye, last week with the first official ‘flight’.

BA staff, trade partners and, of course, her majesty’s press all were invited to the launch, Backchat included.

But could we just waltz onto the wheel? No, well not without barging past more celebrities than we have ever seen in one place.

There was the delectable Tara Palmer-Tomkinson in a very fetching shocking pink cowboy hat and blue crocodile skin boots; the suave Des Lynam; the all-action Anneka Rice; a grinning Clive Anderson and naturally Joanna Lumley, the ultimate social climber from Absolutely Fabulous.

We are sure there were more but it all became a bit of a blur with all the smoozing going on.

Ms Lumley officially opened the Eye to the words of poet William Wordsworth and up we went, rolling into the blue.
