State of emergency lifted in Egypt

A three-month state of emergency and night-time curfew in Egypt has been lifted.

The move comes two days earlier than expected and follows a court ruling.

It comes less than a week after the Foreign and Commonwealth Office relaxed restrictions on travel to the country, re-opening trips to Luxor and Nile cruises.

An adviser to Prime Minister Hazem el-Beblawi told the BBC that both the state of emergency and the 1am-5am curfew were lifted with effect from yesterday.

The measures were introduced after hundreds of people died following the clearing of the pro-Morsi camps in the capital.

Morsi, the country’s first democratically elected president, was ousted by the army in July following widespread demonstrations against his rule.

He is currently on trial for allegedly inciting the killing of protesters outside the presidential palace last year.
