UK hotel prices on the decline, finds study

Average UK hotel room prices fell in the third quarter as prices were cut in popular cities, according to latest statistics.

Only London, Manchester and Reading saw an increase in average room price per night with an increase of 4.11%, 3.94% and 4.66% respectively.

The biggest reduction was seen in Edinburgh, with prices dropping by 11.76%. However, the Scottish capital still remains the second most expensive city in the UK behind London for a hotel stay, with an average room price per night of £108.56.

This trend reflects the overall success of the Olympics last year, seen throughout the UK. Room rates increased in the third quarter of 2012, but these have not been sustained following the games with the notable exception of London, the latest Hotel Price Radar from hotel portal HRS shows.

Glasgow has seen a very marginal change in rates, reflecting increased worldwide interest in the city which will be hosting the Commonwealth Games next summer.

Top cities across Europe have seen an increase in their room rates per night with Copenhagen seeing the biggest rise of 9.29% to give an average room price of £116.14.

London is the second most expensive city, with an average room price of £124.76, behind Zurich, which charges an average of £128.19, the HRS study shows.

The biggest European drop was seen in Istanbul, with a 6.96% drop resulting in average room prices of £75.92.
