British travellers have been advised to take care as a nationwide election takes place in Thailand on February 2.

Some polling stations will be open for advance voting on January 26.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said in an updated travel advisory: “There are likely to be protests at polling stations and some of these could turn violent.”

The FCO continues to advise Britons in the country to take extra care and avoid all protests, political gatherings, demonstrations and marches.

The election follows anti-government demonstrations centred on Bangkok which kicked off in November.

A 60-day state of emergency was declared earlier this week following a weekend of violence in the Thai capital.

Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Thawatchai Arunyik said: “We would like to reiterate that all authorities involved and the concerned private organisations continue to work hand in hand to ensure the safety and convenience for all tourists to Bangkok.”
