Villa Holidays: Alternative options, Italy

Italy

Watermill, Gualado: this 13th-century watermill was once a fortress and stands in a valley near the small town of Gualado in The Marches. An underground tunnel used to link it to the town. Externally the mill retains its original features, while the interior combines an atmosphere of warmth and comfort with a strong sense of history. It sleeps six and has its own private pool. A week in October costs £1,284 and in September £1,576, including car rental, with The Individual Travellers Company. The price is for a maximum of six sharing.

Florentine House: with a style and grandeur typical of Tuscany, Villa Albertina stands in extensive private grounds and woods with its own pool and fantastic views over the Florentine countryside. A cypress tree-lined driveway leads to the stunning house whose spacious rooms are furnished with much antique furniture. The house sleeps up to 12 and costs £2,280 per week, including midweek ferry crossing from Dover to Calais, between July 24-August 20, with Meon Villas.
