Most British travellers would like all airlines to adopt a standardised cabin bag allowance.
A survey of 1,000 people by Skyscanner found confusion surrounding baggage charges.
Almost a quarter of passengers surveyed had been caught out and forced to pay additional fees to check in their luggage at the airport.
The majority (82%) wanted to see common standards set covering all carriers.
However, 30% admitted to wearing their heaviest clothes to travel and 12% smuggling an additional bag on board in an effort to get around the restrictions.
EasyJet guarantees the smallest cabin bag at just 50x40x20cm, while Thomas Cook offers a weight allowance of just 5kg, according to a Skyscanner guide to cabin baggage limits.
Iberia is the most generous airline with a baggage size of 56x45x25cm and unlimited weight allowance, closely followed by sister airline British Airways which restricts the weight of hand luggage to 23kg.
