Consultation period for future of Manston airport extended

The consultation period over the future of Manston Airport has been extended.

Union Unite, which has 40 members at Manston, said the extension came following talks with management.

The 45-day consultation period had been due to end on May 11, and redundancies could have been announced from that date, but the new agreement means the consultation goes on past this date.

Up to 150 mostly part-time jobs were put at risk last month when the airport revealed it was in talks over a possible closure.

Unite regional officer Ian McCoulough said: “We had talks with the management today and it said that the consultation period was now extended until a final decision is made. This is to be welcomed.

“Unite would like Manston to continue as a viable airport, as we believe it is vital to the local economy in terms of employment and economic growth in Kent. We will do our utmost to achieve that goal.”

He said the company was still considering the two business plans that could secure the airport’s future that the workforce put together.

The next management meeting is on Wednesday, followed by another on April 24.

Earlier this week it emerged KLM would not return to the Kent airport even if a buyer is found.
