Relief as Edinburgh airport festive strike is averted

A threat of flight disruption at Edinburgh airport over Christmas and new year has been averted.

Aircraft fuel tanker drivers have agreed a new deal on pay days before a planned walkout.

The Unite union members working for suppler North Air at the Scottish airport had warned of 19 days of industrial action from December 18 until January 6 after rejecting a 4.5% pay rise.

However, a spokesperson for North Air said: “We are pleased to confirm that we have reached an agreement with Unite on pay and that the planned strike at Edinburgh airport has been called off.”

Details of the deal reached have not been disclosed.

North Air employs 57 people at the airport and of these, 46 are operational workers who deal with refuelling and vehicle movements.

An Edinburgh airport spokesperson said: “We’re pleased that Unite and North Air have reached an agreement.”

The union had warned of “widespread disruption” over the festive season if the strike had gone ahead.

Unite has been approached for comment.
