Virgin Atlantic has been named as the 12th largest UK private company by sales.
The airline and its sister tour operator Virgin Holidays achieved sales of almost £3 billion and is expected to return to profit this year.
Monarch Holdings, the parent company of Monarch Airlines and Cosmos, came in 55th position in the Sunday Times Top Track 100 published yesterday.
The group achieved sales of £957 million having flown seven million passengers to more than 60 destinations. Monarch runs a fleet of 43 aircraft and plans to order 60 more.
Virgin Trains was in 60th position in the table with sales of £898 million, followed by Butlins, Haven and Warner Leisure Hotels parent Bourne Leisure in 65th place with sales of £862 million and foreign exchange company Travelex in 99th spot with total sales of £640 million.
Alliance Boots topped the table with sales of £23.367 billion with Cathay Pacific owner, the conglomerate Swire Group, in fifth position with sales of £6.253 billion.
A typical Top Track 100 company is owned and run by established families and entrepreneurs or managed by senior executives. Around 40% are owned by private equity investors.
