Westjet to debut in UK with Glasgow service

Canadian airline Westjet is to operate its first service from the UK with flights from Glasgow to Halifax in Nova Scotia.

The daily flights will run from May 29 next year until October 23.

The carrier is to use next generation 136-seat Boeing 737-700 aircraft on the summer-only route.

Passengers will be able to access connections to Montreal, Ottawa, Winnipeg, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver and 16 other cities in WestJet’s Canadian network.

The new route follows Westjet starting transatlantic flights from Dublin earlier this year.

Nova Scotia premier Stephen McNeil said: “Nova Scotia and Scotland have always had close ties and this connection between Halifax and Glasgow only brings us closer.

“Whether it’s a business traveller looking for opportunities to export our goods and services to Europe, or tourists who now have an easier way to experience Nova Scotia’s hospitality, this link will help drive our economy forward.”

Halifax International Airports Authority president and chief executive Joyce Carter said: “We are delighted that WestJet will offer direct service to Glasgow.

“This new route connects our region to a destination that has deep-rooted cultural significance for many of us, and takes full-advantage of pent-up demand for service to this market.”
