Pilots’ strike forces Germanwings to cancel flights

Lufthansa’s budget arm Germanwings has cancelled 100 flights today due to a 12-hour pilots’ strike.

The walkout by pilots’ union Vereinigung Cockpit is due to start at midday and run until midnight local time.

The airline admitted that there will be “considerable disruption and delays” to all of its operations.

A reduced replacement schedule will run during the walkout but the carrier urged passengers to check the status of their flight before leaving for the airport.

The airline would normally run about 450 flights today.

The strike is the seventh to hit the Lufthansa group this year as a dispute over an early retirement scheme drags on.

Vereinigung Cockpit, representing about 5,400 Lufthansa pilots, wants the airline to maintain a scheme that allows pilots to retire early at the age of 55 and still receive up to 60% of their pay before regular pension payments start.
