SEAFRANCE has issued leaflets for its passengers explaining the new duty-paid shopping system following the abolition of duty-free.
The publication stresses that prices are still cheaper on board ferries than in the UK and there are now no quantity limits provided the goods are for personal consumption.
Managing director Robin Wilkins said: “Customers will not pay more for alcohol and cigarettes. They will be sold at duty-paid French prices, which means savings of around 40% or more on British high-street prices.
“Once customers get used to the new system, they will be able to turn the situation to their advantage. The ferry companies will offset the financial loss of duty-free by selling much more at duty-paid prices.”
SeaFrance will only be selling alcohol and cigarettes in French waters, but perfume, confectionery or gift items can be bought throughout the ferry journey.
Duty-free cigarettes and alcohol will still be available in ferry bars and restaurants for passenger consumption while travelling.
