AMERICAN Airlines and Oneworld partner Canadian Airlines are offering electronic interline tickets to enable passengers using both carriers to travel without a paper ticket.
Interline e-tickets are available direct from the airlines or through their ticket offices. Both are working on implementing technology which will allow agents to issue the tickets through computer reservation systems.
The airlines – the first to implement such technology – are developing systems to be used by other Oneworld airlines, such as British Airways.
American has been researching the possibility of interlining e-tickets with rival United Airlines for two years. Both airlines will continue their joint research.
Meanwhile, United reported that more than half of 7m tickets issued worldwide in May were on e-tickets. The landmark was reached five years after United started offering the ticket.
United claims it can issue e-tickets to 95% of its destinations.
