Edinburgh airport evacuated after security scare

Some flights to Edinburgh airport were diverted and others were delayed following a security alert which saw thousands of passengers being evacuated.

The alarm was raised after a suspicious object was detected in the screening area early on Sunday morning.

The airport reopened shortly before 9am following the security alert.

Travellers were told to leave the building. Police Scotland confirmed an ongoing incident.

Some flights were reportedly diverted to Prestwick after the early morning alert.

Reports suggested that the incident was sparked after the discovery of a suspicious package.

Hundreds of people were left standing in the car park as they awaited an update on the situation, according to the Daily Record.

But the incident was later said to have been a false alarm, and passengers were allowed to return to the terminal building.
