HKTA prepares for millennium extravaganza

The Hong Kong Tourist Association believes that the extensive programme of millennium celebrations, which start in November and continue through to April 2000, will tempt more Britons to visit the destination over the coming months.

“We are not restricting our millennium celebrations to two or three days in December. We have an extravaganza running from November to next spring,” said a spokesman for the tourist association. Visitors don’t have to be in Hong Kong on New Year’s Eve to celebrate the millennium because there are so many other events going on at other times.”

The events programme, which is being promoted under the banner Hong Kong 2000: The Dragon’s Spirit, will kick off on November 28 with the World’s Biggest Tea Party.

This will be followed by such events as a Parade of the Dragons at Happy Valley Racecourse on December 31 and February 5 to celebrate the Chinese New Year, and an international football competition and international arts festival.

HKTA executive director Amy Chan said, “We believe these events will be a big attraction. We are working with the travel trade to provide attractive packages for visitors.”
