LAST September I accepted redundancy from my company after they moved my office to a new location, resulting in an average 2hr journey in traffic each way. I am now ‘dead in the water’ employment wise.
Forty years in travel counts for nothing anymore. Over 20 years in one sector is notattractive to employers.Commitment and hard work are not seen as beneficial.
Employers refuse to believe Iwill work for far less than the £24K Ilast earned. Thesituation actually is that I have excellent references and will turn my hand to any travel task.
Me and people like me are faced with the possibility of completing the last 10 years or so of our working lives outside the industry we know well.
Employers, ask yourselves these questions: how many people do I employ who are over 50? How many are likely to stay for more than eight years? I expect the answers will be few and not many.
Applicants over 50 offer many years of committed employment, don’t reject them on age alone.
