NCL prices cut as US market shuns Europe

night itinerary on Norwegian Dream starts at £1,105.

“The Kosovo crisis has impacted on our US business,” said UK and Continental head of sales Nick Sharps. “We are doing a mop-up exercise by maximising our yield and capacity out of the UK.”

NCL is planing two travel trade parties to celebrate the launch of Norwegian Sky this summer. Agents will get to stay overnight on the ship while it is moored in Dover on August 6. Tour operators and other trade partners will be entertained on board the following night.

NCL is so confident that Norwegian Sky will be delivered on schedule it has promised agents a free cruise if they have to cancel bookings on its inaugural voyage, which departs on August 9.

After operating in Scandinavia this summer, the ship will carry out 14-night itineraries in the east and west Caribbean this winter, then move to Seattle in May 2000 to offer cruises to Alaska. The cruiseline plans to team up with tour operatorsto offer fly-drive add-ons in California.

Meanwhile, NCL is planning to reposition its vessel Norway in the eastern Caribbean all year round. The ship has been carrying out European itineraries in the summer and Caribbean itineraries in the winter since 1997, but it will be based in Miami from August 21.

“The Caribbean is the second largest market out of the UK. We don’t have a seven-day product there at present,” Sharps explained.

UK CUSTOMERS are being offered discounts of up to 48% on Norwegian Cruise Line’s Scandinavian cruises this summer to make up for a shortfall in US passengers, who are staying away because of the war in Kosovo.

An 11-night cruise out of Dover on the company’s new ship, Norwegian Sky, now leads in at £1,325, while a 12-night itinerary on Norwegian Dream starts at £1,105.
