Air Jamaica is to launch daily flights from Heathrow to Montego Bay in summer 2000, writes Paul Norris in Montego Bay.
The increase from the current five a week will start next spring when a sixth weekly flight is added.
Chairman Butch Stewart said the carrier would then switch to a daily schedule in July of next year. “Five a week is pretty good at the moment, but the slot situation at Heathrow is not perfect,” he said. “I am working towards daily flights to summer 2000.”
Speaking on the airline’s inaugural flight of its Airbus A340 service last Wednesday, Stewart said the increase in Heathrow flights was just the start of European expansion plans as the airline is also looking to launch flights to France, Germany and Italy. The carrier’s first A340 serves Montego Bay and Kingston from Heathrow and offers the only first-class service to Jamaica (Travel Weekly February 3). Meanwhile, Air Jamaica and Trinidad-based BWIA are looking to reopen alliance talks.
Stewart declined to reveal topics for discussion but they are expected to include joint purchasing and route co-ordination.
