Probe into death of Aer Lingus passenger who bit man

Police are investigating the death of a 24-year-old man who collapsed after he was restrained on board an Aer Lingus flight.

Crew members had attempted to handcuff him after he bit another passenger, and he was attended to by a doctor and nurse travelling on the flight.

The Brazilian man was travelling from Lisbon to Dublin yesterday afternoon when he became agitated and attacked a fellow passenger and had to be restrained by crew. He then collapsed.

The aircraft diverted to Cork airport and landed at about 5.40pm. The man was attended to by paramedics but pronounced dead soon after, the Irish Times reported

The male passenger who was attacked and bitten in the incident was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries.

It is understood the man, who was sitting at the rear of the aircaft, became agitated midway into the two-and-a-half hour flight before attacking the other passenger who was seated near him.

The airline confirmed that “Aer Lingus flight EI 485 Lisbon to Dublin, diverted into Cork due to a medical emergency on board.

“There were 168 guests and six crew members on board. The flight landed safely at 5.40pm, local time.”
