Wizz Air delays restart of services from Romania airport

The planned restart of flights from by Wizz Air from Craiova airport in Romania has been delayed by more than two weeks.

Major upgrades need to be completed before the budget carrier uses the airport which serves the country’s sixth largest city.

Services scheduled for Craiova will instead run from Bucharest Henri Coanda airport with a coach transfer of more than 140 miles.

The eastern and central European carrier is offering refunds, flight credits or free rebooking until November 30 for affected passengers.

The airline originally planned flights from Craiova to Luton, Barcelona, Bologna, Milan Bergamo and Rome Ciampino from October 25. That date has been put back until November 10.

Wizz Air suspended flights from Craiova on June 1 to allow for major renovation work at the airport over the summer.

But the airline’s executive vice president, John Stephenson, said: “Until the Romanian civil aviation authority issues approval for normal flight operations from Craiova, including taxiways and aprons, we will not operate there.

“Though we have no choice, we apologise to our customers for this delay in resuming our flights from Craiova.

“We know there will be some inconvenience and we are doing everything we can to minimise it. We are eager to resume our normal operations in Craiova.”
