Amadeus bids to lift business travel sales

going to target business travel agents of the mid-market size because we are keen to show them what our system can do. We want to invite them in to see that Protempo can work just as well for them as it does for our leisure clients.”

In the past, Amadeus UK has focused its attention on building ties with the leisure market which has been attracted to the GDS by its relatively low rates.

Reynolds, who worked for Galileo for seven years before coming to Amadeus, said: “I think Amadeus got caught up being busy with the leisure market, servicing clients like Lunn Poly. Of course it will continue to work hard in that area but we want to branch out now.”

The company, which says its market share overall in the UK is 8%-10%, has tripled its staff numbers in the last year and claims to be the fastest growing GDS. Reynolds would not disclose his budget for breaking into the business market, but stressed the company’s large staff increase was an indicator of the resources available.

He added that the company had already received an “encouraging” amount of interest from the business sector and would be able to reveal names in a few months.

AMADEUS UK is trying to encourage business travel agents to use its Protempo standard product.

The initiative is part of the global distribution system’s bid to increase its share of the market from 1% to 12%-15%.

The move follows the appointment of former Galileo marketing manager Steven Reynolds to head up its business development division.

Reynolds said: “We are going to target business travel agents of the mid-market size because we are keen to show them what our system can do. We want to invite them in to see that Protempo can work just as well for them as it does for our leisure clients.”
