Premium-rate approach helps to cut waste

IN RESPONSE to SuziStembridge’s letter of the week about disposing of waste (Travel Weekly March 29), I wish to add a few comments.

The subject of brochure wastage has been high on the agenda of tourist boards recently.

The popular solution has been to run premium-rate brochure request lines (usually at 50p a minute) whichautomatically leads to thecustomer paying something towards brochures and also deter time wasters and brochure collectors fromcalling.

While initially there is always some negative reaction from existing customers to being charged for a service they previously receive free of charge, the overall fallout has been negligible. I see no reason to believe why customers who accept premium-rate charges for tourist board brochures would not be happy to accept the same from tour operators or travel agents.
