Uganda: Killings heighten pressure on Foreign Office

Killings heighten pressure on Foreign Office

TOUR operators have renewed their calls for Foreign Office travel advice to be drastically improved following the massacre of eight travellers trekking in Uganda a week ago.

The Association of Independent Tour Operators said it was shocked to learn the Australian government had advised against all travel to Uganda’s gorilla country in the southwest while the Foreign Office had only advised people not to go to the north and west.

AITO spokeswoman Sue Ockwell also defended tour operators after foreign secretary Robin Cook said they could be more responsible. “Operators do more than expected. You can never guarantee safety,” she said. London-based Abercrombie and Kent and Acacia Expeditions had clients in the groups and one of the Britons killed, Joanne Cotton, worked for Acacia.
