Marathon man opts for injury-time itinerary

WE all knew it wouldn’t happen, what with his track record – smoking, drinking, and the odd, half-hearted game of footie.

Yes, surprise, surprise, Steve Jones – Travel Weekly’s senior reporter, tour operators and agents – has pulled out of the London Marathon.

Steve’s official line is: “I suffered a knee injury in early January for which I am receiving treatment. Unfortunately, my physio has advised me the injury will not heal in time for the marathon in April.

“I am disappointed and would like to wish my colleagues every success.”

The truth? While his dedicated colleagues and others from the travel industry will be crawling their way around the gruelling 26-mile marathon course, Steve will be sipping cocktails and getting ship-shape as he sets sail bound for New York harbour on the QE2.

But in a fit of guilt, Steve promised to donate a full month’s wages to the charity he was supposed to be putting his best foot forward for.

A cheque for ú16.35 is on its way to the Family Holiday Association.
