Seminar looks north to raise air capacity

THEGovernment has announced it will hold a seminar on April 22 to focus on improving air services from northern England.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott said airlines, airports, local businesses and councils will be invited to the event in York to give their views.

Prescott said: “The north of England study will be carried out by a team of specialist aviation, commercial and environmental consultants. The seminar will concentrate on future demand and providing improved air services and airport facilities.”

The seminar forms part of the Government’s transport White Paper, which aims to improve UK aviation.

Manchester Airport has backed the Government’s initiatives to improve air services, especially Prescott’s statement that he will look to give airports greater commercial freedom to invest in new facilities.

The airport’s chief executive Geoff Muirhead said:”We have been talking to the Government about this for some time and are very encouraged.”
