The Port of Tyne in North Shields is undergoing a ú1.6m extension to its ferry terminal. The move follows an increase in passenger numbers from 400,000 to 700,000 in the last three years.

Qantas has beenunaffected by the ongoing Asian economic crisis, reporting increased interim profit figures to December 31 1998. The Australian carrier said the 30.5% rise in operating pre-tax profits to ú141.7m was down to the axeing of loss-making services and increased capacity on key routes.

Malaysia Airlines is to host a travel fair in Manchester on March 11 to promote its new Kuala Lumpur flights. Over 50 exhibitors will be at the event in the Palace Hotel in Oxford Street. The twice-weekly Manchester-Kuala Lumpur service is launched on March 30.
