DAVID Quarmby is to step down as English Tourist Board chairman on May 31 – but he will remain chairman of the British Tourist Authority for a further three years.
Quarmby has been chairman of both bodies simultaneously since June 1 1996.
Following a review of the country’s tourism strategy, the Government now plans to re-invent the ETB as a slimmer, more strategically focussed body (Travel Weekly December 16 1998).
Quarmby said: “It has been clear to me for some time that separating the chairmanship of the ETB from the BTA would be good for both organisations.
“There is now the opportunity for a new chairman to take forward the agenda for the new tourism body for England.”
