P&O Cruises considers plan to upgrade Southampton terminal

P&O Cruises is in negotiations to get its cruise terminal at Southampton upgraded or rebuilt.

The issue is currently under discussion with the operator of the terminal, Associated British Ports. P&O has used the terminal since the 1940s, but its current contract with ABP runs out at the end of this year.

P&O marketing director David Dingle said the company wanted to see the terminal modernised.

He said the lounge area was generally adequate, but P&O wanted improvements to the baggage handling and the passenger drop-off and collection point.

Dingle refused to be drawn on whether P&O might move its ships to Dover – where a second cruise terminal is under construction – or Harwich.

However, he added: “We recognise there are now other ports in the UK which can handle ships the size of ours, and at this point, we need to consider all the possibilities available.”
