BUGIBBA
The costly St Paul’s Bay regeneration project has improved roads and added a new seafront promenade, clock tower and pedestrianised areas to Malta’s budget resort. It is especially popular with self-caterers.
COMINO
A square mile of rock located between Malta and Gozo, this island has just two hotels. It is a summer-only destination, great for diving and a variety of other water sports.
SLIEMA
Malta’s largest town and longest-established resort. Its five-mile long seafront is lined with hotels and apartments; a wide restaurant selection caters for all tastes, from fast food to quality Mediterranean cuisine.
ST JULIAN’S/PACEVILLE
The lively end of Sliema and Malta’s entertainment and nightlife hub. Stacks of music bars, discos, restaurants of many nationalities, multi-screen cinema and ten-pin bowling. New five-star hotels grouped around St George’s Bay.
VALLETTA
Malta’s historic capital, built by the Knights in the 16th century, is on everyone’s sightseeing list. But its tourist accommodation is limited to a handful of three-star hotels.
MARSASCALA
Attractive one-time fishing village in Malta’s south that has grown substantially in recent years. Now offers a good selection of bars and restaurants and an expanding self-catering sector. Especially popular in summer.
QAWRA
The quality end of Bugibba, with more hotel than apartment accommodation. The resort’s general infrastructure has also been upgraded and more accommodation is being built behind the seafront.
GOZO
Malta’s small green sister island, it presents a much quieter holiday experience. Good ferry and helicopter links with Malta; accommodation includes many converted farmhouses. The two resorts, Marsalforn and Xlendi, are the size of large villages.
