Factfile: Malta – activity round-up

Activity round-up

Diving

Where to go: there is good diving all around the Maltese islands, with some of the best sites found off the southern shore of both Malta and Gozo. Spectacular rock formations can be discovered in the clear deep water beneath the sheer cliffs – features include arches, caves, buttresses, drop-offs and tunnels. Wreck diving in and around Grand Harbour reveals the remains of shipping and aircraft destroyed by bombing in World War II; wrecks include the destroyer HMS Maori, 16 metres down off Fort St Elmo, a Blenheim bomber and Mosquito aircraft.

When to go: diving is an all-year activity, but most popular between April and October. Belleair claims 35%-40% of its diving packages are sold for winter.

What it costs: Regal Holidays offers one-week flight-inclusive half-board diving holidays in Gozo from £429, including eight shore dives and four boat dives (four-night breaks from £299 include six shore dives). Belleair will pre-book the full range of PADI and BSAC dive courses (sample prices: five-day BSAC Ocean Diver, £237-£254; seven-day PADI Advanced Plus, £230-£247).

Sailing

Where to go: the waters around the Maltese islands provide excellent sailing for experienced helmsmen – the sea can vary from ultra-calm to choppy depending on the direction of the wind. Novices will appreciate the relative calm of sprawling Mellieha Bay – dinghies can be hired, along with other water sports equipment.

When to go: conditions are at their most predictable from June to October, with winds generally light. Stronger winds in spring and autumn provide more of a test for experienced sailors.

What it costs: Belleair offers pre-bookable keelboat and dinghy courses for all levels of ability at the Malta Sailing School in St Julian’s. A two-day introductory course costs £101-£109 for keelboats, £68-£73 for dinghies. A four-day keelboat improver’s course costs £194-£209; a five-day dinghy advanced course is priced from £156-£167.

Golf

Where to go: Malta has only one golf course, though others are planned. The Royal Malta Golf Club, at the Marsa Sports Club just outside Valletta, offers a par-68, 5,567-yard parkland course that makes few demands of the regular golfer and is ideal for the holiday player. Lessons can be arranged. The sports complex also boasts 17 tennis courts, five squash courts, mini-golf, billiards, fitness centre and outdoor swimming pool.

When to go: golf is available all year round, but the Royal Malta course is at its best in spring, before the summer sun has parched the rough. Winter is another good time, with playing conditions more amenable than in the UK.

What it costs: golf can be pre-booked through Belleair – spring and summer prices for a round are £18 in April/May; £17 from June to October. A weekly ticket costs £95 in April/May; £88 in June/October. Junior rates are available.
