THEGOVERNMENT wants people holidaying in the UK to go home feeling they received good value and service and were not ripped off, according to tourism minister Janet Anderson.
She said the tourism strategy document, due at the end of January, would be aimed at creating a good quality, value for money UK holiday product.
“Everybody has had the experience of staying in an awful hotel which isn’t cheap, she said”
Anderson said the strategy document would be full of examples of best practice. She wants people working in the tourism industry to learn about and benefit from existing methods, rather than “reinvent the wheel” themselves.
For example, Brighton and Bournemouth had taken the lead in developing business tourism, she pointed out.
The document will also look at the confusing number of symbols used to grade accommodation, how to encourage young people into travel and tourism careers, and how to improve training.
“The strategy is not a one-off,” said Anderson. “It is something we want to review. We want to come back to it in one or two years’ time, and we would do that in conjunction with the industry.”
