Club Med sets sights on deal with UK chain

Paris-based Club Med is hoping to strike an exclusive deal with a travel agency chain or operator as part of its plans to double the number of UK clients over the next five years.

The Paris-based company is in talks with operators and agents and could agree an exclusive deal to market its product.

Club Med’s UK and Ireland operation managing director Alex El Kayem said:”We think Club Med has the potential to go from 35,000 to between 80,000 and 100,000 clients. We’d like to achieve this target in three to five years. The key to growth is not only marketing and the amount of money we spend on communicating the product but who is selling us.”

One option for Club would be to enter an agreement similar to the one it reached in Germany last year, where operator Dertour, which owns a chain of agencies, is now sole distributor.

“We’re in talks with tour operators and retailers in the UK but are not sure if it would be on an exclusive basis at this stage,” said El Kayem. The UK market represents only 2% of Club Med’s annual sales, compared to the French market which contributes 30%.
