MUNDI Color has seen an increase in its accommodation-only business as a result of the growing demand for low-cost flights to Spain and Portugal.
Speaking at the launch of the operator’s 1999 brochure, product development manager Tony Maniscalco said: “The people who are buying no-frill seats are more independent minded and are looking for accommodation with a bit more character which we can offer.”
“They are likely to hire a car and take a trip inland – that is the growth market.”
Maniscalco’s comments follow plans by low-cost carrier EasyJet to expand its network to include Malaga, Alicante and Faro.
The operator, which is featuring 2,300 paradors and pousadas, is hoping the trend will help increase carryings to Spain and Portugal to 15,000 this year, a 20% rise on last year.
The brochure heavily features flydrive holidays with prices leading in at ú509 for seven days’ touring Seville, Cordoba and Granada. Car hire and flights to Malaga are included.
Prices have remained static although short-break rates in Barcelona have risen by 3%-4%, reflecting the popularity of the destination.
The brochure includes holidays over the millennium although prices will not be released until the second edition is launched in September.
“Hoteliers have yet to give their rates,” said Maniscalco.
He blamed the UK for hyping up the millennium and sparking an increase in prices. “The British are panicking about millennium holidays. Hoteliers will see this and raise their prices.”
