Career history: read English and History at Bristol University, then spent a season as a Club 18-30 rep in Portugal and two years travelling around South America, US and the Caribbean, working in restaurants and on boats. Spent two years as a zookeeper of elephants at Port Lympne Zoo Park in Kent. In 1986 joined Saga as products development executive and promoted to contracts manager. Joined Airtours as contracts manager in 1987, promoted in 1988 to senior contracts manager and then head of overseas operations. Was purchasing director at Airtours from 1992- 1997, then resigned to join Carlson. Ten months into his gardening leave, he was tempted back to the Airtours organisation by Going Places.
