Education: eight ‘O’ levels.
First Travel Job: office co-ordinator, All Canada Travel and Holidays.
Career Path: after living in Canada for 11 years Denise moved back to the UK and joined a mail order company on a temporary contract. After two months in this position she was asked to join the full-time staff and then went on to achieve various promotions. When Denise left the company, after 10 years of service, she held the position of sales manager for two subsidiary companies.
Training: Denise has participated in various in-house training programmes together with two external courses, The One Minute Manager and Leadership in Senior Management.
Advice for people wishing to develop a career in travel: “Knowledge of the industry is an advantage but skills and training obtained elsewhere can be just as effective when combined with self motivation, enthusiasm and a passion for travel. It doesn’t matter what background you come from if you have the desire to succeed and are willing to listen and learn.”
