Visit Texas’ real cowboys at the US’s original rodeo site
WHILE Dallas is emphasising its original western tradition as part of its themed hospitality at Pow Wow, neighbouring Fort Worth, just just 30mins away, is actually a working cowtown within a modern city environment. The city is known as the Western Triangle, with its historical Stockyards and rodeo; the cultural district; and modern Sundance Square. As well as a host of bars and restaurants, the square also features the new Bass Performance Hall.
But it is the Stockyards National Historic District that gives Fort Worth its genuine old west appeal with its boardwalk-lined main street which has retained many of the original facades of the early 1800s. Some buildings have also been turned into bed and breakfasts, providing an interesting alternative to the downtown hotels.
Each summer, the daily ritual of a longhorn cattle drive is performed from the pens in the Stockyards to the banks of Trinity River. The local cowboys hired to tend the herd give visitors a brief insight into their work and lifestyle.
Weekends are a popular time to visit when a live rodeo takes place at the Cowtown Coliseum, home of the US’ first rodeo.
