GOING Places managing director Terry Fisher has been promoted to UKLG retail managing director as part of a shake-up of Airtours’ agency division, as exclusively revealed by Travel Weekly May 1.In his new role, he will assume additional responsibility for Travelworld, the company he founded 18 years ago, while current Travelworld MDTrevor Davis becomes sales director for the enlarged group.
After Fisher’s controversial programme of cost cutting at Going Places’ head office and in branches, Davis’ role will be to restore staff morale.
“We are conscious there has been a lot of pain with the cuts and Trevor will focus on the staff, helping to improve sales and staff morale,” said Fisher.
“In the past few months we have not been very sales focused at board level and Trevor will also concentrate on that with presentations, conferences and sales targets.”
Fisher admitted he would have faced an uphill struggle trying to improve morale on his own after cutting costs.
“However, I hope people will see the positives of the work we have done,” he said. “For example, we’re launching a new pay scheme this month and more staff initiatives.”
Fisher stressed that Going Places and Travelworld would keep their own identities with separate marketing campaigns. He added that they will have different sales forces, both reporting into Davis.
“There will be no further integration of brands,” said Fisher. “Going Places and Travelworld are both successful retailers in their own right.”
Going Places is to continue with its policy of cutting costs.
