Comment: With challenges come opportunities

As government business resumes, the travel industry will be refocusing on maximising opportunities, says Travel Weekly’s Lucy Huxley

Like many millions around the UK and farther afield, members of the travel industry paused business on Monday for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.

Many did so as a mark of respect, while others wanted to ensure all members of staff who wished to pay tribute had the opportunity to do so.

After a tumultuous few years for the industry and the country, it felt slightly odd for the noise of government business in particular to quieten during the period of mourning.

And after this unexpected hiatus, all eyes will now return to the challenges facing the sector and the potential impact of a range of financial measures due to be announced this week.

Pressure continues to grow from multiple angles, but as Advantage chief Julia Lo Bue-Said pointed out last week, we must avoid “talking ourselves into a crisis”.

Despite the challenges ahead, there are will undoubtedly be opportunities, with many firms feeling bullish and optimistic about enduring consumer resilience.

These challenges and opportunities will be among the many topics discussed at this week’s Travel Weekly Future of Travel Conference, held in partnership with Google at its central London offices.

The event will bring together a stellar line-up of speakers and presenters, and I am sure it will be packed with insight.

We’ll be covering the conference in detail on travelweekly.co.uk and in our print edition in the coming weeks, so make sure you check out the coverage to see what those charged with leading our industry feel about the prospects for its future.
