Government and industry-wide collaboration is needed to accelerate the development of sustainable aviation fuel, according to the Business Travel Association.
It wants to see sustainable booking platforms created while SAF credits should be available at the point of sale to educate travellers.
New BTA research found that the industry is reliant on SAF as a key facilitator of decarbonisation, but all players in the supply chain must do more to innovate and deliver the fuel at scale to reach net zero by 2050.
Chief executive Clive Wratten said: “Our research is clear: SAFs are available now and possess the potential to significantly decarbonise the travel industry.
“Therefore, it is our responsibility to implement government-mandated booking platforms that educate travellers on their sustainable activity at the point of sale.
“Words are no longer good enough, we need to work together to form a clear pathway to net zero.
“Providers, airports, TMCs and government bodies must collaborate to deliver sustainable aviation fuels and ensure the decarbonisation of aviation.”
Meanwhile, Emirates is re-joining the BTA to play an active part in recovery of the sector from the pandemic.
The Dubai-based carrier’s environmental activities are seen as help to transform the future of corporate travel.
The airline’s sustainability commitments will support the BTA’s industry campaign to reach net zero by 2050.
Wratten said: “I am delighted to welcome Emirates back into the BTA community and I look forward to them actively engaging with the travel management sector as we all emerge from a very difficult period.
“Emirates is a world-leading airline and business travel and our members play a significant part in its success so it’s very exciting to have them back at the heart of our thriving community.”
The airline’s UK divisional vice presidemnt Richard Jewsbury added: “We are pleased to be re-joining the influential BTA community and look forward to continuing to support the business travel industry, as the post-pandemic recovery of the sector accelerates across our global network.”
