CAA urges booking with Atol-holders ahead of US reopening

Consumers planning travel to the US when borders reopen on Monday are being urged to book Atol-protected trips.

The Civil Aviation Authority’s Atol department issued advice as people plan to return to transatlantic travel for the first time since the start of the pandemic 18 months ago

Travellers should always check that their travel provider is a legitimate Atol holder, according to the latest advice.

Paying by credit card is advised to benefit from enhanced purchase protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act as well as taking out travel insurance.

Those planning US trips also need to be aware that Covid-19 restrictions can vary depending on state and even city.

“In many areas there are mask mandates and vaccine requirements, so make sure to check the restrictions at the destination frequently to avoid any surprises,” the CAA’s Atol department said.

Head of Atol Michael Budge said: “With travel to the US reopening and the wider travel situation continuing to improve, many people will be excited to travel again and keen to financially protect their trip.

“Booking an Atol-protected holiday, paying by credit card and taking out travel insurance provides extra certainty that holidaymakers can book with confidence and get back to travelling again.”
