Flooding prompts travel warning for Portugal

The Foreign Office has issued an alert to UK travellers about disruption caused by heavy rain and flooding in Portugal.

It said: “Many parts of Portugal are experiencing adverse weather conditions. The Portuguese authorities have issued yellow and orange alerts for mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira. These are expected to remain in place until Friday 16 December.

“Some areas of Lisbon are flooded due to heavy rain causing travel disruptions to trains and metro lines. Some major roads are closed.”

The FCDO advises travellers from the UK to check the latest updates and follow the advice issued by Portugal’s Civil Protection Authority on its website.

Reuters reported that the armed forces have been mobilised to support clean-up efforts.
