Foreign Office flags Venice entry fee from summer 2023

The Foreign Office has urged visitors to check with operators before travelling to Venice next year as the Italian city will impose an entry fee for visits.

In the update to its advice for Italy, under the Local laws and customs section, the advisory says: “Visitors to Venice and the surrounding islands for less than two nights are planned to be subject to for an entry fee between €3 and €10 from summer 2023.

“This will be payable via a dedicated website or through an app.

“Non-compliance may result in fines of up to €300. Check with your travel operator before travelling.”

The fee aims to tackle over-tourism in the historic city and it is believed that Venice will become the first city in the world to require payment to enter.
