Foreign Office issues warning about Indonesian volcano

The Foreign Office has issued a warning to travellers following the eruption on Sunday (December 4) of a volcano in Indonesia.

The FCDO advises against all travel to within five kilometres of Mount Semeru, East Java, and exclusion zones put into place by the local authorities.

The BBC said that no injuries have been reported but nearly 2,000 people have been evacuated from the area around the volcano.

“Videos of the event showed the sky turning black as a massive plume of ash blocked the sunlight,” added the BBC report.

The FCDO says Indonesia sits along a “volatile seismic strip called the ‘Ring of Fire’ in the Pacific” and “volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur regularly”.

“There are many active volcanoes in Indonesia, any of which can erupt without warning resulting in the evacuation of villages within a 3 to 7 kilometre radius,” it added.
