Travellers to France have been warned about large scale demonstrations after pension reforms were pushed through parliament without a vote.
The alert from the Foreign Office came as police clashed with protestors in Paris following two months of strikes against the move to raise the French retirement age from 62 to 64.
The updated travel advisory also highlighted co-ordinated cross-sector action planned for March 23 which may start the previous evening and last for several days.
Highlighting that demonstrations had started in central Paris and elsewhere in the country, the Foreign Office said the police presence has been increased.
“Protests could turn violent and/or continue. These could lead to disruptions to road travel,” the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said.
“Several unions have called for rolling cross-sector strike action from Tuesday 7 March, with co-ordinated cross-sector action planned on Thursday 23 March
“Localised or sector-specific strikes could also occur outside these dates. Industrialised action may lead to disruption to services.
“You should monitor the media, check the latest advice with operators before travelling, avoid demonstrations and follow the advice of local authorities.”
The ongoing industrial action across France has led to the cancellation and delay of flights, ferry crossings and rail services such as Eurostar.
