Live Heathrow flight departures go on display at Canary Wharf

Live Heathrow flight departures are being displayed at London’s Canary Wharf as part of a direct connection by the new Elizabeth line to the airport.

The flight departure boards take real-time information from the airport terminals, with Elizabeth line passengers now able to travel from the Docklands financial district direct to the airport in 45 minutes.

The £18.8 billion railway, also known as the Crossrail project, links Reading and Essex via central London and opened almost four years late in May.

The east and west sections of the line were connected to central section tunnels on Sunday (November 6).

More two million trips a week are already being made on the line, with free wi-fi due to be introduced on trains soon.

Passengers can now also use the Elizabeth line seven days a week following the start of Sunday services through central London.

The frequency of services in the central section between Paddington and Whitechapel has increased from 12 trains an hour all day to up to 22 trains per hour in peak times. This will rise to 24 trains an hour at the busiest times between Paddington and Whitechapel by May 2023.

The direct connection makes the journey to the airport the quickest route to and from Canary Wharf.

Heathrow chief commercial officer Ross Baker said: “The full opening of the Elizabeth line will mean the UK’s travel hub, Heathrow, and its business hub, Canary Wharf, are directly connected like never before.

“It enables all passengers travelling through Heathrow to get to and from Canary Wharf direct at unprecedented speed which is a big win for global business and sustainable travel.

“We work extremely hard to consistently enhance passenger experiences and displaying flights from the airport at Canary Wharf is a way of making sure that starts at the beginning of the journey.”

Shobi Khan, chief executive of Canary Wharf Group, said: “The new Elizabeth line is a game-changer for our residents, office workers and visitors as people can now travel direct to and from Heathrow in just 45 minutes.

“Business travellers and residents who would have previously opted for multiple connecting tube lines or taxis can now enjoy state-of-the-art travel on the Elizabeth line, which is comfortable and greener.”
